"People don't by WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it" - Simon Sinek
I wanted to take this opportunity to explain my journey of getting here. Last year, if you told me that I would be a partner of a Black Owned Business, I probably wouldn't have believed you. I have always had dreams of being a part of a business of my own, and even had a few failed attempts in that quest.
So the question remains "Why G+Co?". I guess to answer that I would start by saying that for one, I am an advocate of positive images of people of color, especially in a professional setting. I am an advocate of giving back to the communities that raised us, so the scholarship component drew me in. I am also an advocate of subscription services, as I had used a few before. Prior to seeing G+Co, I hadn't thought about getting a box that can help enhance the look of my suit when in the office. I used to use socks as a way to express myself.
In April of 2016, I went to a game night in New Jersey that was hosted by one of my friends. When I arrived, I was instructed that there will be a raffle and upon looking at the items, I saw a box. In the box was a navy blue and white checkered tie, brass feather lapel pin, cologne wipes, and blue and white polka-dot socks (Which was our inaugural box). I thought that the concept was unique. I asked my friend about the company that makes the box. He had told me that the Founder was looking for Brand Ambassadors to help promote and enhance visibility of the brand. I jumped at the opportunity. I spoke with Terrance (the founder and CEO) about the duties of being a Brand Ambassador, which included purchasing a box each month, wearing the products and posting them on my social media pages.
For those that follow me on Instagram or Facebook, prior to this opportunity, I hadn't posted a lot of my work attire aside from my socks. So I thought to myself that this would be a wonderful opportunity to promote the brand by wearing the product. Month to month, I would post my work or going out attire while wearing G+Co Accessories. As I would get more accessories, it challenged me to think of ways to incorporate them in my work attire, which was the fun part. I know that life isn't all about fashion, but feeling good about ourselves is so important and has a huge effect on our everyday lives. Soon enough, friends were asking me about the company and where they can get accessories or a box of their own.
In the back of my head, I was also thinking of ways the brand can grow. So I would reach out to Terrance to ask questions/ give some recommendations of things he can do to grow the business, which included buying previous months boxes, and buying items from previous boxes a la carte. Also, I had a few contacts that I reached out to to either partner with or feature the company in their blogs and websites.
In December of 2016, Terrance reached out to me asking if I could be a partner. I never thought that I would be asked that question, as I was just doing the work of what a Brand Ambassador entails. I never thought I would be afforded the chance to help Terrance run this business.
Six months later, I haven't regretted my decision. Doing the work behind the scenes is something that is a challenge but also fun. After getting off of work between 5-6pm, I come home and work on G+Co tasks for a few hours, which include but are not limited to working on partnerships, thinking of boxes and apparel for the coming months and handling some of the social media. It's a wonderful yet pressured feeling knowing that you have a role in the growth of the business. I can't tell you how happy it makes me when people either send me photos of them in our accessories or I see them on the street with them on. It is a sign that we are growing. This business has become a passion of mine as of yet and we can't wait to show you what we have in store in the coming months. It has only just begun!
